Ghajini- The hindi version review
Posted: January 4th, 2009 | No Comments »I just came back from the theatres watching Gajini. This is an Indian Hindi remake of the movie Memento. The tamil version was called the same and starred the actor Surya in place of Amir (or Aamir) Khan. These posts contain spoilers so be forewarned. A random titbit here is that most of South India always add that extra “H” to the word to spell it out, while the Indians in the North usually omit it. For example Khadhi is spelt that way in the south while the North spell it as Kadhi. Some other words are Ananth/Anant, Raitha/Raita (that’s a curd dish), Shri / Sri … etc etc. Basically the south use the letter “h” and the North don’t that much. BUT in this movie, it’s the other way around
Hindi – Ghajini
Tamil – Gajini
Neat right? I thought so too.
The Story/Summary
Aamir Khan is an industrialist who runs a company that’s a shady copy of Airtel. He’s rich famous etc and gets his skull cracked open by a local gunda who came to kill his going-to-be-wife because she was involved in rescuing some girls who were wisked away for prostitution and could identify the gunda. Wow say that sentence without taking a breath. Aamir remembers things for 15 mins only and then forgets. He has some of his motor skills intact so can eat, take bath, poo (not shown) and take pictures and navigate the scenery well. Story revolves around how he tries to find the baddies, kill them and good-bye their asses.
The Good
Aamir’s role as the retard. Does a great job so much so that it over shoots into the non-retard part at times. I think he
really lived this role up like Heath Ledger and I DARE YOU NOT TO look at his shirtless song sequences and wonder what the eff? Half the movie he’s flexing his muscles and you can’t but be amazed by his build. The bad part are the suitings, whichever clown was in Van Huesen cannot obviously dress a guy up. That half shirt folded up to reveal biceps was an overkill. The direction is really good and some of the shots taken were mind blowing for an Indian film. Asin’s such a pleasure for the eyes. In this she looks even better than the Tamil version and talks very well. This movie she actually out does Amir Khan in the delivery.
The Bad
Besides what I wrote above, Jiah Khan. She doesn’t act too well, her expressions fail but she’s got a smoking body. So she more than makes up for it. Not really.. Her acting compared to Nayanthra in the Tamil version is sub par. The rest of the women inthe movies weren’t that good either. But since she had a crucial role, I was glad to see more of Asin and less of her.
The Ugly
Amir Khan’s costumes, the villians shirt and the iPhone being used by nincompoops. Well not really, only ugly thing was the dress code by the hero in the movie. Terrible.
I think the Tamil movie scores higher on this, unbelievable but true. Watch that as well to see Surya’s stellar performance. Watch this one to see Asin and hear better songs and a tad more professionally cut movie. My rating out of 10 would be a 6.5. What about you?
